The Phonetic Alphabet

The aim of using the 'phonetic alphabet' is to eliminate the risk of misunderstanding that might arise from different pronunciations, especially between different nationalities.

Here, we are dealing specifically with the English Language, which has been adopted in different forms worldwide, so it is very important to be clear and precise when giving data 'verbally', say over the phone, relating to container numbers (1), or similar codes in letters.

Phonetics are particularly useful in spelling out a name or a word that the other person isn't familiar with, again to avoid misunderstanding.   The following is the phonetic alphabet list.

TIP:   In case you get caught out not remembering any of the names, use City Names
that everybody knows, e.g. Florida, instead of Foxtrot, and Amsterdam, instead of Alpha.

Background Information

The English Phonetic Alphabet was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in the 1950s to aid in what was back then bad-quality radio (verbal) communication. It was adopted by NATO for military use and is often referred to as the NATO phonetic alphabet.

Notes:

(1)   Container Numbers are made up of 4 alphabetical digits known as its 'prefix', followed by 6 numerical digits known as its 'suffix' and a further a numerical known as the 'check-digit'.

CROSS-TRADE

Some companies buy and sell goods that originate outside their base country and are similarly destined outside the coutry where they are based.

One way to do this is to import and re-export the goods, but this can be costly.

So, if the documentary needs, cargo markings and other factors allow, the goods could just as easily be shipped directly to the final destination — without having to transit through your base country — which is referred to as "cross-trading", sometimes referred to as "triangulation".

Can we help you in such cases? YES, of course we can!
