Container Specifications

Although Sea Containers are built to specifications dictated by the International Standards Organization (ISO), they may vary a little in actual fact and it is always important that you double-check specs with your chosen carriers or forwarders. It is advisable to check the container's 'internal' dimentions, 'door openings' and 'maximum payload' before planning your load or stowing your cargo.

Container CSC Plate

Every sea container must be certified as 'seaworthy' before it can be accepted by any carrier for shipment. There are specially accredited organizations that examine and certify containers against specific criteria as may be seen on the 'CSC Plate' shown here.

This is usually found (very visably) affixed on the container's door.   It is made of stainless metal and carries important details such as the Container Number, the stacking capability of that particular unit (since every container will need to withstand the weight of other 'full' containers stacked on top of it at some points during its voyage), as well as the maximum gross weight allowable. The Gross Weight of the container is not the same as the groww weight of the cargo as it includes the weight of the container itself (tare weight) plus the cargo weight (payload). Refer to the Specifications Table.

Containers must be examined and certified periodically; not more than 5 years between manufacture and/or each certification date.
